Finally. I've been looking for this stuff as long as I've known about it. And why not? The fancy bottle. It's "micro-brewed". And...it's imported. That alone is worth the price of admission. After all, root beer is uniquely American and generally not appreciated outside of North America. When I saw this is the health food aisle of a Safeway in Dover DE (for $5!) of course I had to pick it up. The bottle was a little dusty so I was concerned that the brew had been on the shelf an overly long time. Any worries it had gone flat were quickly eliminated when I popped the top and got a blast of carbon dioxide. So how is it? Carbonated. Definitely carbonated. Reminds me of "Fizzy Lifting Soda" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory if you know only of the movie). I was belching across 3 octaves with this stuff. Still, it's pretty good. Dark with a rapidly dissipating head. It is as creamy as it can be considering the bite of the carbonation. The anise flavor is not too strong and all the other flavors blend nicely. Can't pick out the nutmeg though I'm sure it's in there. It didn't have that decided cane sugar note though it does have what I call a darker flavor which I think may be due to the molasses. At first I didn't care for it but the more I drank the more I liked it. A good one to whip out if you're trying to impress a root beer loving lady (or guy) on a first date. It sounds good and looks good so no one will ever admit it's just pretty good...except me, and I give it a B.
